RENEW - Respect, Educate, Nurture and Empower Women
The promotion of women and girls in Bhutan is of crucial importance for the overall development of the country. Through the support of the non-governmental organization RENEW, which is committed to the relief and strengthening of disadvantaged women and girls, special attention is paid to the protection and education of women in Bhutan.
RENEW stands for Respect, Educate, Nurture and Empower Women. The organization was founded in 2004 by Her Majesty the Queen Mother Sangay Choden Wangchuck, with the aim "to better the lives of victims and survivors of domestic violence and help integrate them back into their communities as independent, socially and economically productive members of society.” Her Majesty is also active as a goodwill ambassador of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), spreading awareness on the subject of health and violence prevention.
RENEW actively promotes gender equality and provides protection and strengthening of women by:
- Counselling for victims of violence
- Legal assistance
- Emergency shelter for women and children
- Vocational training
- Micro enterprises for income support
- Prevention and education programs on HIV and AIDS
